This booklet is for patients who are having surgery at the MUHC. It may also be helpful for family members or caregivers who are helping patients to prepare and recover from surgery.

Does this guide explain what happens on the day of surgery?

If you are going home on the day of your surgery
It gives you information starting from your admission, the operating room and your stay in the post-anesthesia care unit, also called the recovery room.
The guide discusses what to expect for your discharge home and during your recovery.

If you are being admitted to the hospital after your surgery
The guide gives you information starting from your admission, the operating room and your stay in the post-anesthesia care unit, also called the recovery room. Then it also covers your stay at the hospital day by day.

Will it tell me what to bring to the hospital?

Yes. The booklet includes a practical checklist for what to bring and also suggestions on what to leave at home.

Does it cover recovery and going home?

Yes. It gives you information about how best to manage pain after your surgery, exercises to do after surgery, and planning your discharge from the hospital. The booklet also includes a list of situations or symptoms so that you know when it is important to contact your healthcare team or go to the emergency room.

Should I still follow my healthcare team’s instructions?

Yes. This booklet is meant to support, not replace, the instructions given by your surgeon, nurse, or healthcare team.
